Medal "For The Defence Of Odessa".

In "mondvor" web site there is a prototype medal of Odessa, with different ribbon and color of the medal:

Look at the lighthouse - it is very sharp, in contrast to the final version:

??????

Hi Tal

I've just dug out my Russian and Soviet Military Awards book by V A Durov published by the Lenin State History museum, published 1990.

It is a very simple book compared to PD's and for that reason I had stowed it away.

But it has got pictues of some phototypes.

Please see below, it's not a brilliant picture but it is in stark contrast to your scans.

I would love to hear the story behind your observations.

regards chris

Hi

In the book "Medals of USSR" by Volodin/Merlay (see the reference section for more details) there are 3 prototypes for this medal. In fact, every medal "for defense" or "for liberation/capture" has some prototypes and scetches. There are unrealized orders as well, such as order of Bagration, which look very much like the order of glory.

Hi Tal

where did you get the pics from or are they yours.

I hope you're right because if you are, it means I have a phototype of the sevastopol medal? and not a bummer!

Cheers Chris

IMHO,

The strike is too sharp!!! Unless this was one of the first 1000 or so, the strike shouldn't be this sharp. Even then, to achieve a relief like the one on this medal, the press needs to be set to higher striking pressure and strike the blank several times.

I would tender a guess and say it's a modern piece.

Rusty.

Hello All

I have been offered this Odessa medal, I am told it is a var 2
1960's issue.

Looks good to me, but what do I know.
What do you all think, and is $90usd a fair price?

Thanks

I think that 90 dollars is to much...
I sold one for 50$ and there are internet sites that sell them for well under 90$

I don't think $90 is a bad price. Besides it's very hard and next to difficult to find an original 1940's issue for under $100.

Odessa Medal

Okay, one more question, is not the var 2 harder to find as it was awarded to those that did not get one in the 1940's? For what ever reason.

I would think there is less var 2 than var 1's?

Paul McDaniels book does not mention this.
