I believe some of those photographs date from the Great War. Technology may not have been RADAR but were a little more advanced....

I believe the early round "horns" were replaced by the squared ones not for acoustic reasons but the fact that they are considerably easier to transport. Logistics were and are vital to the war effort. The round ones must have been extremely difficult to move, not a problem during trench warfare but a real burden during blitzkrieg.
