OK after 4 years, I got one. Pay way way too much for this order. This one is # 0991 and it is in great condition.

This order is made of gold plated silver and red glass enamel. It is heavy since it is almost 1/4 in thick. I will post detail measurements shortly.

A nice type one badge for this order. As it was only awarded for about a year (1980-81), I suspect most of the specimens we see are unissued escapees from some vault in Kabul.

Both are wonderful pieces. I'd say outside of Mongolia, the Soviet Afghanistan awards are the nicest I've seen (and the prices reflect that).

No, I have never seen a numbered one of the second type. Neither have my contacts in Kabul.

My type 1 is 0543.

They were quite busy in just a year or so, if all these were awarded pieces.

I purchased this order this week in Afghanistan. Of all the commie Afghan medals and orders, this one is, by far, top in quality. Including the orders seen here on this forum, I have only seen only 4 others on the internet.

As for the 2nd version of this order, I have not seen any serial numbers on the ones I have seen.

From talking to the Afghan vendors, many items made from silver or gold were melted down for their content. There are plenty of fake US silver coins and silver jewery on sale at the market here.

Almost all silver-plated Afghan decorations seen have some sort of scratch marks on the back to the base metal.

There was one for sale on ebay a few weeks ago # 0537 from a Sweeden dealer. He ended the auction early when local buyer offer him $300 for it (??!!) Wow, that buyer got himself a GREAT deal.
