For Wounds

While there was no equivalent of the Purple Heart in the USSR during WWII there apparently were different recognitions given for wounds. Cloth wound stripes as well as medals and orders.

Pobeda45’s is the first Red Banner I’ve noticed given for wounds, but have seen Bravery medals, Red Stars and OG IIIs for wounds.

Wondering if anyone knows if there was any official list of who should get what for a wound. Any known criteria, hierarchy, etc.? Which awards have you seen given for wounds? Heard somewhere that the 1985 OPW 1st Class was for veterans who were wounded, while the 2nd class was for those not wounded. True or not?

3. to extend the action of the present edict: to participants in the war with militarist Japan.
About the official order for wound as far as I know there were only straps, later on RS.
But with a wild description and overlapping of what the orders should be given for + human fact. It's always difficult to say . Besides the RB is not for wound only.

Re: For Wounds

Thanks for that translation, very understandable. Yes, it appears that a 1st class was awarded for participation and being wounded in combat.

Looking through my translations I've only one unequivocal 'for wounds' award. (Though I've read others of course here and on other forums.) Awarded in 1976 it's to a Black Sea Marine for a severe wound suffered in the battle at Novorossiysk in February, 1943. (He was invalided out of the military in September, 1943, because of the wound.) He was recommended for a Red Star, but it was 'downgraded' to an Order of Glory III. The citation reads:

Quote:
He participated in the battles against with German Fascist invader in the period of the Great Patriotic War within the 255th Naval Brigade since 12 July 1941 till 3 September 1943 in the position of Searchlight Operator.

On 2 February 1943 while participating in the offensive battle in the region of the city Novocherkassy (nb: this is what the translator returned, but it can't be accurate as the battle that the 255th was involved in on that date was at Novorossiysk. It's either a translation error or written incorrectly in 1976.) was heavily wounded: a gunshot wound by an explosive bullet in the right shoulder’s joint.

Due to the injury he was treated in the Military Navy’s hospital № 40 since 4 February 1943 till 3 September 1943. At the end of the treatment he was found unfit for military service and transferred into the reserves on 3 September 1943.

The injury is verified by the certificate of illness of the Military Navy’s Hospital 40 № 430/506 of 31 August 1943.

He is an Invalid of the Great Patriotic War of the 1st group.

He is currently in retirement. In his place of residence he is characterized positively. He does not have compromising files in the national courts or police.

The submission of the awarding is coordinated with the local party and the Soviet organs.

CONCLUSIONS: Deserves the awarding of the order of the “Red Star”.
Respectfully, I don't read the Pobeda45’s Red Banner citation as being for anything other than the (horrendous) wounds he received. "active involvement on the fronts of [the] Patriotic War" shows he was there, but wouldn't fulfill the criteria for a combat award, especially at the level of Red Banner. Not meaning he didn't deserve the award for his sacrifice, simply that the RB was only for the wounds.

Re: For Wounds

Many awards were granted for wounds and the level award seemed to be for the severity of the wound. I agree that the RB you mentioned was both the worst wounding and the highest level of award.

Re: For Wounds

Here's an example of Bravery medals being awarded for fairly serious, restrictive injuries:

(From Norm, these are in Marketplace too :thumbsup )

I'm glad these people's sacrifices can live on through our research.

I think he meant Novocherkassk, which was liberated on 13 February 1943.

Re: For Wounds

Setting aside KIA awards (obviously wounded, but another issue entirely), here are a few I "happen to know about":

OPW 1

"Tank radio operator [Stepan Stepanovich.] Mamenko was among the advancing troops during the attack on Rzhev as a part of the 1132nd Rifle Regiment of the 342nd Rifle Division of the 30th Army of the Central Front. Tank’s Commander was killed in combat on 31 December 1942. Sergeant Mamenko assumed the command of the tank. Mamenko’s tank, having advanced, crushed up to 30 Germans, three mortar detachments and a battery of 45mm guns.

"The enemy fought back fiercely. Heavy artillery of the Germans opened fire on Sergeant Mamenko’s tank. The tank was hit. Sergeant Mamenko was heavily wounded on 1 January 1943. Both of his legs were amputated below the knee. At this time he is an invalid of the 1st Group."

OPW 2

"Guards Private Aleksei Yakovlevich Verozubob was a participant of the Patriotic War from 20.8.42 through 7.12.45 on the Volkhov Front as part of the 206 Independent Machinegun-Artillery Battalion, 53 Army as a Line Manager-Communications Soldier.

"While defending the village of Gruzin (Kirishskii Region, Leningrad Oblast) he was seriously wounded by a bullet in the left buttocks. As a result of his wound, his testicles were amputated on the basis of a report from Evacuation Hospital #1148 dated 13.3.43.

"At the present he works as the Chief of Military Records in Angren and his work receives positive reviews.

"I am recommending Guards Private Aleksei Yakovlevich Verozubov for the Order of the Patriotic War II Class for his active participation in the Patriotic War and subsequent wounding."

Red Star

"Comrade Alimov Giez was an active participant in the Great Patriotic War in the defense of our Homeland. He fought in the 473 Rifle Regiment as a rifle squad leader [Rifle Squad Leader, 473 RR, 154 RD] from 12.1942 through 7.1944.

"On 11 July 1944 during combat he received a serious blind shrapnel wound of his left hip with damage to the hipbone. This wounding is verified by an information memo from EvacHospital #5954 dated 26.6.1945. At the present time he is a GPW Invalid, III Category.

"He works as a teacher in School #31, Pastdargomskii Region. He receives positive work evaluations.

"In agreement with this awarding are Secretary of the Pastdargomskii Regional Party Committee, Comrade Sharadzhabov, and Chairman of the Pastdargomskii Regional Executive Committee, Comrade Khudaikulov.

"Conclusion: For active participation in the Great Patriotic War and receiving a serious wound, he is deserving of the Order of the Patriotic War II Class. [Downgraded to Red Star.]"

Medal for Bravery

Under cover of coming darkness soldiers of Junior Sergeant Tuzov bombarded the enemy’s machine-gun emplacement with grenades. When they were falling back the enemy brought down heavy gun-fire. At this moment Junior Sergeant Tuzov was heavily wounded in the left leg with bomb splinters. Comrades carried their commander from the battle-field. Afterwards he was directed to Hospital №74 where he stayed for 3 months. Then comrade Tuzov was directed to his unit.

"Has no disablement as the result of the wound.

"Has been working as an under-the-crane worker at the #1 rolling shop of the Zlatoust steel plant since October 23, 1945.

"Conclusion: Deserves to be awarded the ‘For Bravery’ Medal for having been wounded while participating in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."

I have others where the paperwork has only been summarised, not fully translated. Those awards are probably the single largest class among what lives with me. :(

I don't think so simply because the 255th Naval (Rifle) Brigade made landings at what became the "Little Land" near Novorossiysk on 3-4 February 1943, and had launched before that to get in action. As far as I can find the 255th wasn't at Novocherkassk.

Re: For Wounds

Interesting aggregate, showing that many different awards were bestowed for wounds. Remarkable, to my mind, that none of the regulations around each award explicitly state (exc: 1985 OPW I) that they should be awarded for being wounded, yet as time went on it apparently became official policy. I say apparently because of the number reported. If anyone ever runs into documentation of this development I for one would love to read it.

There's a paper in there for the right student... or non-student fascinated with these things. :) The right reader of Russian of course.
