Here is one from an Armenian private of cavalry killed for Motherland in August 1941.
It's the man on the right on the picture. Here is his Ossoaviakhim booklet and his Vorochilov Badge document. It's the man on the right picture Other picture and badges are not of the same man. Jerome |

Death Notification.
I picked up in a Tashkent bazaar a set of originals (including old notorized copies) and xerox copies for one man. Once I got it home and actually read through what I had, it turned out to be very interesting. It contained the cable sent to his family in January '44 reporting he had been killed the previous November '43. It also contained later docs such as his post-war военный билет (last date was '63) and earlier "Red Army Man" book (copies), jubilee medal docs and BM doc (copies), Liberation of Ukraine znachok doc (original), some certs of military training (copies and originals), and a couple of his wife's docs. A very interesting find...! That must have been one very happy family when they realized their boy hadn't really been killed! He lived at least until the 1990's because I've got that LibUkraine doc and a copy of the 50th Jubilee of the war doc from Uzbekistan.
I've attached a scan of the KIA notification doc and a scan of a copy of a later doc that I believe certifies that he had received wounds in May '44. |

Re: Reported KIA, but survived the war...
When you have the chance to troll real bazaars in the harder-to-reach areas on a regular basis instead of as a tourist, you can really turn up some fun stuff that's close to the source and generally safe, real, and reliable. You guys would love the Sputnik electric samovar (c. '73) I found a couple weeks ago! :)

Nice find! these sort of documents really tell the stories behind these people.
Could you post some of the VB pages showing where he served and was wounded? I have a whole series of these VB's and Red Army books (KK's) - I love them. Simon |

That's what I think the is anyway. Just got it today and I'm off to the interwebz to try and translate it.
Image one is the outside and I'm guessing it's addressed to the next of kin? I see a Feb. '46 Moscow postmark along the top. The second image is the inside. No clue yet what is says yet but it looks likes someone named "Jerry" signed it in red pencil along the bottom. :chuckle The first line I read as: "Управление по учету погибшего и пропавшего без вести рядового и сержантского состава" and I get: "Management under the account of the victim and the missing private soldier and сержантского structure" What's the one word I got wrong? I'm certainly right about the MIA part of this I thinks. Then this: Известите гр. проживающ что военнослужащий уроженец рождения 1912 года в бою Социалистическую Родину Похоронен --------------------------- Becomes this: Inform гр. проживающ * that the military man the native of a birth of 1912 in fight the Socialist Native land Is buried * what's this mistake?

Re: Missing in Action notice?
And to be a bit more precise, he was KIA on 2/20/1944 and buried in Estonia.

Re: Missing in Action notice?
Thanks Marc! As usual you're extremely helpful.
So this is a standard form letter sent to the next of kin stating that this peron is dead and buried? It has nothing to do with being "missing in action"? And I assume it's not unusual that it took 2 years for the next of kin to be officially notified about the fate of their soldier?

Re: Missing in Action notice?
Eric,
The same form was used for KIA and MIA. I have a few of each, most of them having been sent quite some time after the event. Marc |
