Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

Great points so far. Credit where credit is due, CtahhR PMd me this proposal this morning and I was skeptical that the members would accept it. I certainly didn't want to move forward with it and the result being..

I'm glad to see so far many of the heavy hitter members are in agreement. Now all we have to do is make everyone happy

Also credit where credit is due, the suggestion for the group name for #3 was mine, not CtahhR's. So my bad

Since this was CtahhR's idea, I'll let him distill down the members thoughts into a list we can all agree with. I've never seen someone so enthusiastic about the restructuring of a forum section before..I'll bet he has a super-organized closet or socks with his name embroidered in them or something If a list can be compiled in two weeks time, I will start creating the groups. Why a two-week deadline? because if we can't agree on something in two-weeks, I doubt we'll ever be able to agree on a reorganization.

Marc had a good suggestion regarding structure. Keep it simple. Keep group names brief and to the point. Keep structure logical like the outline for a term paper.

Don't blame me... until this December I only had 3 socks to my name... and at least one of those could be contended.....

Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

This may be regrettable since I'm opening the flood gates...

What do YOU want to see added to the new "Not Soviet Union" sections that are NOT already covered?

I have my own desires but I am not going to bias the discussion by voicing them first but they will come into the open if no-one else mentions them first.

When the suggestions are collected I will add them to a presentation of the proposal plans before going "live". Of course not everything can make "The Final Cut" but that's the nature of things.

Ever advancing!

Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

Well, as I said above:

Quote:
While I see the appeal of having a free-standing non-Soviet (by any definition) section (and putting pre-Soviet, Soviet republics, and post-Soviet some place else), I could also make an argument against the divorce. On balance, the divorce may be the most logical solution.

We still have a matter of definition before us.

Warsaw Pact: Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, DDR, Hungary, Poland, and Romania.

Fine, easy.

COMECON would add: Afghanistan, Cuba, Ethiopia, Finland, Iraq, Lao Republic, Mexico, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Vietnam, PDR Yemen, and Yugoslavia.

Some may have "issues" with this? But I think these belong (but maybe not Finland and Mexico?).

COMINFORM would add the communists of France, Italy, and Trieste. This may be "a bridge too far"? COMINTERN would go ever further afield.

And, yet, some places are still missing. China, Kampuchea, and North Korea spring immediately to mind. There may be others.

I think having categories (organized as some now are: titles, orders, medals, etc.) for all is a good idea. "Build it and they will come."
I'd think:

Afghanistan, Albania, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, DDR, Ethiopia, Hungary, Kampuchea, North Korea, Lao Republic, Mongolia, Nicaragua, Poland, Romania, PDR Yemen, and Yugoslavia. Again, all only/mainly in the socialist period.

I'd personally like to see Iraq (republic only) included (COMECON) and could fill it almost immediately.

I think we could pass on Finland and Mexico (though they were COMECON).

Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

CtahhR, I would suggest keeping a rough draft of the reorganization posted with the current ideas/suggestions in place. There is much to integrate with the last batch opinions. Once we see what that looks like perhaps we can then appeal to our members for more help? I'm trying to visualize what the structure looks like with all the great ideas we've had so far and I'm already lost. Having a visual outline would greatly improve our ability to get to a final draft.

The three socks..all the same color?

On to it... Same coloured socks? No chance. I got socks for christmas so now I'm spoilt for choice! Those gold tipped ones are so decadent!

Right off I go to "compile"....

Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

And, within each country, we'd need separate sections:

Titles (not for all)
Orders
Medals
Badges
Uniforms

??? Just my two tugriks worth.

I think that Ed missed a couple of potential candidates in his list: Angola (definitely) and Benin (possibly).

I'd add a "Papers/Documents" section, and possibly a "Miscellaneous" one to put the inevitable stuff that won't fit in any other section

Absolutely Angola. Oops. How could I have missed that.

Yes, documents and misc. belong too. I was just working off the top of my head.

Re: Please Vote on Rearrangement of Soviet Bloc section!

Angola is added.... Benin is being "looked in to".

I'm not sure if there is need for a specific "Misc." section as the mismatched threads can continue to be "down at the bottom" as presently located, unless of course more folks would like a "Misc." section.

Still collecting information. Expect a preliminary list sooner rather than later.
