Looks like the original that the 30th anniversary medal for state security and for the "ZNB" (rough equivalent of Soviet MVD) were made from.
In fact, I am curious if anyone knows of any badges for SNB service similar to KGB, Bulgarian KDS and MVR or even the spectacular Romanian Securitate badges. I've seen ones for the Border Guard, but not the actual SNB security service (not to be confused with the ZNB - the MVD of Czechoslovakia). Phillip

Medal Of The National Security Corps.
Hello all - I have a question about the SNB medal (Sbor Narodni Bezpecnosti). I was not able to find the medal in question, so if the answer is already in a thread could you please post the link.
My question is how rare or common were these medals? Here is the medal in question. |

Re: SNB medal
This medal is the same as the one you have included in "Stasi Decorations and Memorabilia, Volume 2". Again, the only description I am able to get is that it is for service. I have seen the very same medal with "ZNB"- this would be the Slovak variation of the medal.

Re: SNB medal
Greg - Thanks for your photos, much appreciated. It appears that the SNB had more medals related to years of service and achievements. I think both our medals posted point that out.
Greg, also refer to pages 285 and 286 of stasi v2. |

Re: SNB medal
Yep, there she is! Hard to get a feeling for the rarity of these things; the market isn't there, apparently. I got these from Israel (I get alot from there)- they come and go on our favorite auction site. I'm happy to have them because they are part of the whole Eastern Bloc security community, as you show in your book.

hello gentlemen,
maybe I'm wrong, as I don't master czech language and english langage not really better, but I'd love to expose you another hypothesis. I believe ZNB is the slovakian traduction of SNB ( Zbor Narodnej Bezpecnosti in slovaks documents, Sbor Narodni Bezpecnosti in czech docs). SNB and ZNB are the same identical Minister for Internal affairs, as it was cut in two national pieces to deserve the federal structure of the former Tchecoslovakia and the langage seperation (a thing we could see in the multi langage docs of Yugoslavia and USSR). So there was an Interior Ministry for Socialist Slovakian Republik and an Interior Ministry of Socilaist Czech republik. I do have two groups of policewomen, one czech and the other slovakian, with same medals and same docs, except for the acronyms SNB/ZNB on medals and docs. I have docs and books of the period which indicate some identical medals were stamped in both langages. About the rarity of the medals: they're fairly common, as for most of the Police medals and awards of the former eastern bloc. I'm convinced these medals were made for the police services, so the equivalent of the soviet MVD/MOOP, east-german MdI. I don't know the exact structures of the czesch state security organs, but at best political services did not deserve a whole ministry like it was the case in Bulgaria, GDR and USSR, and were a service in the whole SNB/ZNB. I can show you pictures of the slovak group, and I'm waiting for the last piece of a czech group . Philip, about the easthetics and variety of czech awards of all kinds - I respectfully disagree with you. With the Husak's "normalization", like all others socialists countries, the CSSR did continue to flow loyal communists and workers with thousands of table medals, badges and tinies, without let's no forget some new extremly rare and beautiful variations of state orders (Republic order, Fraternity order, Victorious February order)... About socialist easthetics and design, the czech school was often really close to soviet and east german modernism. the medal of ZNB:

Re: SNB medal
Phil,
I re-checked and from every source at my disposal I'm still getting the Sbor Národní Bezpečnosti (SNB-Czech) and the Zbor národnej bezpečnosti(ZNB-Slovak) or National Security Corps, were the national police in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic from 1945 to 1991. I guess the USSR and CSSR government, while not recognizing two countries, did indeed recognize two cultures. Two organizations comprised the SNB/ZNB, and they were the VB (Veřejná Bezpečnost) or Public Security (Police), and the StB (Státní Bezpečnost), or State Security. Greg

Re: SNB medal
I was just about to mention the StB as the short-lived State Security Agency of the Czechoslovakian Socialist [People's] Republic that I had forgotten when I first replied above. Both of you are correct about the security system of the Czechs and Slovaks. The source of my info was trying to make a sale, not share factual information.
Charlet, I did neglect to mention all of the other kinds of Czech-made awards. I just think that the security service awards are pretty dull in comparison for an emotional reason. However, that ZNB badge of honor is something I would love to find (both Z and SNB).:thumbsup At least I learned something about the ZNB medals and will see about getting some down the road. Thanks, Phillip
