Cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions?

Hello!

I'm sorry if this was buried in another thread, but I had a question about cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions. Did all soldered and unsoldered rings have uncut, i.e. soldered/solid connecting links connecting them to the suspensions? Or did the more mass-produced, later versions, like the Victory Over Germany medal, have pressed-together links (not soldered)? I hope that question makes sense. I just see a lot of cut links on medals.

P.s. what does that mean for the originality of their suspensions?

Thank you!

Re: Cut links, soldered rings, and original suspensions?

Good question. Generally orders and medals had soldered rings. The mass produced jubilees sometimes have the pressed rings. That being said, sometimes the original owners would cut rings to transfer a decoration from a single suspension to a multiple suspension, for example. Cut links indicate that medals were "transplanted" at one time, including the potential to being returned to their "original" suspension. Often smugglers cut rings to enable more efficient portage or avoid detection.

Hi
The suspensions could be divided to 3:

1. Rectangular
2. Triangular
3. 5 sided

Rectangular suspension had red cloth and were used for those medals:

1. For valour
2. for combat merits
3. 20 years RKKA

and for early orders of the PW (Suvorov, Kutozov, Nevski, PW)

Triangular suspension were used for Valiant labour and distinguished labour.

5 side suspensions were established on 19th June 1943.
There are 3 major types, each with several variations:

Type 1 - made of brass
Type 2 - (possible) Nickel-steel alloy, with or without front plate.
Type 3 - Aluminium alloy, with or without out front plate.

The front plate has 2 variation: Brass and Nickel-steel.

Each of the 5 sided suspensions has one of several variations pin back - I know about 11 variation at least.

Esteban,

You may be referring to the 5-sided suspension...

I have bought this bar last year, because of the originality of the suspension.
I had never seen one like this. I think this kind of suspension has not yet be subject of one thread in this Forum...

Front : made of plastic - a kind of thin plexiglass - painted in the back with the colors of the ribbons.
Back : brass, with two pins.

Has someone an idea of the objective of such a suspension ? It is obviously heavier than the classical ones...

Is it only to protect the original ribbons from dust ?
Is it a specificity for displays (museums, ???...) ?
Is it usual to find such pieces ?
Does anyone have such a bar ? (photos ?)

Many thanks.

With reflexion on the "ribbons" part, for better understanding.

Ch.

Any photo of these "single" medals ?

Does some member of the Forum know if this type of suspension, in plexiglass / plastic, has also been used for ribbons of orders (and not only medals) ?

Does anyone has photos ?

Are these plexiglass suspensions also used for orders and high rank awards ?

Has anyone a photo of these single medals with "plexi" suspension ?

Thanks.

Ch.

Currently up on eBay. Starting bid is about $185?
Very interesting, custom suspension. The bar looks to be very well made. Maybe a well-to-do soldier?
I've asked the seller for a better shot of the reverse as well.

Is this sweet or what??? :)

Tal,

This ribbon is for Distinguished Military Service 1st or 2nd class. As per regulations this Medal doesn't belong on a bar.
