Tal,

This type of document was used in 1938-1943. It's not exactly common, but I wouldn't call it rare.

Bravery

I saw Ed advertising a set of two medals for Valor awarded to the same awardee. It seems strange to award the same medal twice. Obviously some items like the HSU were awarded more than once, but I didn't know the lesser medals could be awarded more than once. I would have though they would have got a higher honour the second time around. Was this at all common?

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

Is that five valor medals I can count? I think either he was a very brave fellow, or very popular with his commanding officer. I think, after a few valor ones I'd have given him something a bit better.

Am I correct in thinking the Orders could only be awarded to Officers and men from the ranks could only receive medals?

Kind Regards,
Shane Cook.

He had his 5 "otvagou" medals at the 1945 Pobiedy parade. He was a "minometchik-sergent" in the 8th guards infantery brigade.
He earn his 1st for combat on sept 3rd,1942 near Leningrad, Siniavinski Rayon.
The last one was earned in the Courland peninsula in the night of may 9, 1945 (!). He became a doctor and lived in Moscow.
Mondvor evocates also a second 5-times knight of bravery medal, in Petropavlosk-Kamtchatka Paul Iosifovich Gribkov.

hello, if I'm right some orders were only for officers, and the class followed the rank: Souvorov, Kutuzov, Nevski...
The typical orders given to privates was first the Red Star, extremly common, then the Glory order, specially designed for enlisted men as a memory of the old Saint Georges tsarist order.
I think a private could receive OGW and red banner, this last for high feats of valour...

The OGPW and the Red Banner could indeed both be awarded to enlisted men. For the Red Banner McDaniel's book says that it was awarded to "servicemen" which includes all ranks, and the OGPW to "enlisted and officer ranks."

The most awardings of the Bravery medal was an amazing 6 !! Two individuals tied for this honor, scout V. Breev and Master Sergeant M.T. Marchenko.

Source Nagradoved, Moscow-Kiev, 2003 page 43. The article is a Russian language article entitled "Unique Occurrences of Multiple Awardings of Orders and Medals of the USSR".
