Engaging Afghan War book

I highly recommend Gregory Feifer's The Great Gamble: The Soviet War in Afghanistan. It is in the style of Antony Beevor's book in that it follows individuals and glosses over the major campaigns - don't expect a detailed order of battle book with lots of campaign information.

I just ordered it. You can pick up the hardcover version used stateside for about $9 including shipping through the "used and new" section of Amazon. There's also a Kindle e-version for $10 of you are so inclined.

I forgot to mention it has a few mentions of decorations, about how Brezhnev hinted he hadn't yet received an Order of the October Revolution, about award quotas for political officers, etc.
