Eric,

Your scans are rather blurry. All I can say from these is that your medal looks very similar to present day copies/fakes.

Thanks Marc :thumbsup
Yeah, I figured it was too good to be true.
The one thing I noticed in comparison to the first image is the hoop is much differently shaped. Dunno if that's a tell-tale sign or what.

Interesting group and fascinating story.

The complete set of nominal awards J. Brady for 1 World war, served on H.M.S. Jupiter. In February - May, 1915 the battleship "Floodlight" assisted allied transport courts for pass on ice fields of the White sea to Arkhangelsk with military cargoes. Star 1914 - 1915 inscription on the back 169472 J. Brady A.S., R.N.; Victory medal an inscription on a herd - 169472 J. Brady. ACT. L. STO. R. N; a medal " For Zeal " an inscription - 169472 J. Brady A.B. H.M.S. JUPITER. (for completeness of the complete set there is no one of three medals a making so-called TRIO for the First world war - British war medal 1914 - 1920, but....)

In January, 1915 the British Admiralty has received from the Russian Government inquiry about the help. The matter is that the Russian ice breaker which was used in winter months for a wire of courts on the White sea to Arkhangelsk, has broken and could not be restored втечение several months. And as Arkhangelsk - unique port, through which the Great Britain could supply with an ammunition and the equipment of the Russian allies (while Dardanelless have been closed for pass of courts), in reply to this request by Admiralty has been sent in White sea H.M.S. JUPITER (эскадренный a battleship), constructed twenty years ago in 1895. It has sailed from the Great Britain to Arkhangelsk on February, 5th 1915.

The historian of British fleet Julian Корбетт in the book " History of sea operations in Great war " writes: " the Present ice breaker has broken also the old linear ship " the Floodlight " has established one of many records of war. It is how much known, this first vessel which ever reached Arkhangelsk in February. It remained there till first week of May while the present ice breaker has not come back from repair ".
Providing pass to Arkhangelsk, H.M.S. JUPITER released set of courts ото an ice, if necessary using an explosive for its destruction. During more than two months it was constant every day work of the out-of-date battleship that has allowed necessary military deliveries to reach front.

How there were those events, it is possible to learn from a diary of seaman David Jenkins which in detail described all occurring втечение the period from February, 5th till March, 27th on March, 1915.27th at 20.30 its diary sharply comes to an end.
Records of a diary inform, that to Arkhangelsk the vessel has arrived on February, 14th to the companies with ice breakers Canada and Dwinski. Already on February, 28th they have met S.S. Lintrose and by means of an explosive have released it from an ice field. On March, 18th the distress signal from vessel S.S has been received. Thracia which have been loaded by the special military equipment. Втечение two days seamen H.M.S. JUPITER at unusual temperature for them (a minus of twenty degrees) blew up ices. As a result S.S. Thracia it has been deduced on a tow from an ice 20-kilometer captivity.

The Russian Emperor Nikolay II on advantage has estimated services H.M.S. JUPITER. All crew of a battleship was награжден the Russian awards and medals. The list of names awarded officers H.M.S. JUPITER has been published in THE LONDON GAZETTE, on November, 19th 1919 г:
- Captain Drury St Aubyn Wake R. N. Has received p Vladimir's award 4th class
- Commander Henry Luxmoore - p Anna's award 2nd class
- 14 officers of the ship - p Anna's award 3rd class
- 6 officers of an award p Stanislav of 2 and 3 degrees.

Younger officers (Petty Officers) and all ordinary structure were награждены medals " For Zeal " on Anna and Stanislav ribbons.
Medals " For Zeal " according to the British traditions were handed over nominal, on a herd of everyone the name of the recipient, its service - military number and the name of the ship has been beaten out.
Also the lifelong pension has been promised, but the Russian revolution has made impossible this promise.

Presence of a "native" box in which the medal was handed over J. Brady, and a native tape does such complete set even more interesting.

Medal "For Zeal".

The Medal for Zeal was awarded for meritorious service to the Russian government, in times of war and peace. It came in 4 classes: the large gold medal, small gold medal, large silver medal, and small silver medal. The Medal for Zeal was first instituted in December 1801 during the reign of Tsar Alexander I. After the death of Tsar Alexander III the Medal was redesigned and issued around 1894 bearing the semblance of the new Sovereign, Tsar Nicholas II. The Medal was awarded to civilians that had shown exceptional zeal in the trade, production and social fields as well as to military personnel for zealous service.
SIZE: 28 mm & 50/51mm and then smaller sized at 44/45mm. Unauthenticated 51mm silver medal (3rd class)weighed at 60 grams
Three images of a Zeal Medal.
I've yet to find a serial numbered image, and the medals don't seem to have a class designation on the reverse as well.
I'd guess that one would use the size and medal material (gold or silver) to determine class ranking. All images look to be of a silver color and therefore either 3rd or 4th class examples.

The description of these medals on the internet described the first as being 31mm and made of silver, the second as being 30mm and made of white metal, and in the third image the larger being 51mm(?).
Again, none of the medals have been authenticated; images used for reference to design only.

Imperial Zeal medal

This is allegedly a third class. Silver. 51mm and 60 grams.
Can anyone comment on its authenticity please?
I notice the ring is part of the medal itself like many of the T2 or T3 Soviet medals are. Interesting.
Thanks in advance

Re: Russian medal For Zeal to a British sailor

Thanks Eddie,
We've looked around a lot of sites, including those. Unfortunatly, it is so very long ago, in a time when much personal info died with the person. There is a group photo, on the top site, we've seen it on another site too, if only it had their names under it! No one thought of it at the time I supose, all brave lads too!
