phototype or fake
Hi Tal
Interesting picture, I have two sevastopal medals, one is the excepted medal and the other is questionable (perhaps fake). It shares characteristics of your scan. The star is large, the face of the soldier is different and the stripes on his tele..ne...a...shka (T shirt) are more pronounced. Where did you get the information from? I'm hoping you can add light onto this questionable medal I have. regards Chris |

Excellent catch Tal..did this info come from Alex's site? I've checked my collection and out of three specimens, two have the folded under ribbon and one has the double-point, I've never noticed this before. Does this mean these are variants or that one is fake? Also, notice the image of my double pointed ribbon on the left. There is no double inner circle around the portraits if the sailors as is present on the sailors on the right.

efense of sevastopol
Mine is exactly like Art's. No inner circle and double tail. I have always been told that the first thing you look for in a fake medal is "lack of detail". Why wouldn't you guys move more towards the ones without the double tail as being fake then being a new variant?

Both seem to have distinct features which sets them apart, but for the most part appear to have good detail. My batteries are low on my scale so I have to recharge but I will post weights when I can.
O.K. batteries charged: folded-under ribbon: 16g 32.17mm diameter 2.65mm thick V: 17.5g 32.11mm diameter 2.83mm thick From Volodin/Merlai's "Medali CCCP", prototype of Sevastopol medal. Author's say authentic medals are 32mm diameter, 2.5mm thick. McDaniel shows the v-tail ribbon as authentic and doesn't mention the folded-under variation. He writes authentic pieces are 32mm diameter.

Note the different ribbon and the silver colour of the medal:

Medal Sev Admiral Oktjabrskii Doc
This is a Document for Admiral Oktjabrskii's Sevastopol Medal.
I believe he commanded the fleet, which severely upset the Germans plans in this offensive. Interestingly he only received his medal on 8 May 1960. I found this with a nicely framed photo and a type 2 medals in mint condition. Fred |

Sevastopol
Hi guys
I was wondering if any of you have noticed any Sevastopol medals with this kind of stamp before. Is it a serial number or a date? If it's the date it must have beened put there by the person awarded or maybe later by someone else, right? Hopefully someone know something about this. /David Last edited by daax; 03-15-2006 at 01:27 PM. |
