1927-28 Women's Group Document

Booklet #57 issued to Central Asian woman Lazokat Umarova from the village of Umsang. The back of the document indicates 2000 were printed in Samarkand.

This organization was instrumental in spreading Soviet influence across the Uzbek SSR established a mere five years prior in 1922 during the Soviet Civil War. These activities included the banning of long, gowns covering women (paranja) like the burkhas seen in today's Afghanistan.

The booklet's cover bear's Lenin's "workers of the world unite!" exhortation as well as a quote praising women. The booklet's internal contents permitted free travel to/from a regional center presumably for organizational meetings, as well as instructions for a proper communist woman's behavior, including hygienic directions. The document is also notable in that it used the old Arabic script prior to the adoption of Cyrillic or Latin Uzbek.

In that Umarova never used her transportation authorization, her zeal for the group or effectiveness are in doubt... :)
