Hero Of The Soviet Union,04762,Scout,176th Guards Rifle Regiment
Among the few complete researches for Heroes of the Soviet Union I have, this one is my favorite! I wanted to share it with you.
Mikhail Terentievich Kharin Guards Private Scout, 176th Guards Rifle Izmailsky Red Banner Regiment, 59th Kramatorskaya Red Banner Order of Suvurov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky Division. HSU #4.762 04.12.1944 December 4, 1944, in operations on seizure of the beachhead on the right bank of the Danube River, Guards Private KHARIN acted as a Hero and a courageous son of our Fatherland. He was the first to get across to the right bank with a small group of soldiers and the first to dash to the enemy ditches shouting "Hurray!". the enemies were pouring drumfire; disregarding possible death, Private KHARIN burst into the enemy ditches and started a hand-to-hand fight against the much more numerous enemy. After killing three Germans with grenades, he began to kill enemy soldiers with the butt and head of his submachine gun. In that fight, Comrade KHARIN killed 14 Germans soldiers and took 8 captives. Carried away in the combat, Guard Private KHARIN did not notice that he had lost his comrades who had gone to the right. Seeing the situation was critical, he managed to keep his head; the Germans began to press hard, but the hero had entrenched himself in the ditches and calmly shot the attacking Germans with a submachine gun. Thus, he had been holding on for over an hour and enduring a tremendous fight until his comrades came to his aid. In the battle to seize the beachhead Private KHARIN killed 25 Germans soldiers. For herosim and composure demonstrated in combat the prospective awardee deserves the title of HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION.

Perhaps the Germans he "captured" were in fact only K.O. until Kharin's comrades came to him.
There is no further information in the research...

Laurent,
Great research! Do you have his awards or any photos, other than the one from the Heroes books? Alexei |

Alexei,
Unfotunately I don't have any other picture than the one from the book. Among his awards, I have "only" his HSU medal... Some more information on HSU Kharin! Retired as a Colonel in the 70s. Received the following WW2 decorations: - Order of Lenin - Bravery medal - Combat Service medal - OPW 1st class - OPW 2nd class - Liberation of Belgrade - Capture of Budapest - Capture of Vienna OPW 1st class: (...) March 16, 1945, in oprations on breaking through the ennemy's defense at SAAR village, and April 4-5 in operations for Vienna Guards Senior Sergeant KHARIN, serving in a dismounted reconnaissance platoon, bravely and selflessly went to complete militarrs reconnaissance missions. At SAAR, Kharin was a part of a seizure party and personnally took a captive with a radio station, thus allowing the commanders to stop the ennemy's forces and equipment, which significantly facilitated successful combat of our military units. Bravery medal: (...) He perfoms orders and directions of the command efficiently and timely, his vigilance brought him a commendation by the command. More than once he was commissioned to convoy criminals in hard combat conditions, he never allowed any espaces and always delivered them to the point of destination. When he received his Bravery medal, he was member of the SMERSH counter-intelligence service... :wow
