Navy rear admiral (Russian Federation)

The number of awards on the ribbon does not bother me, as I assumed this guy started his career in the 1970's, maybe later. What concerns me is the lack of WWII commemorative ribbons ( 1975, 1985)....if he was serving, they should be there. I am not saying the ribbons are added, but that would concern me.


The blue backed academy badge is for lesser colleges and schools, the white backed ones for higher academies.

One might assume that an ADMIRAL would have graduation badge from a higher academy.

No, I would not assume that. A lesser school, like the one here, could be a stepping stone to start from if he were unable to get into one of the top schools (navy officers were the rarest in these schools anyway) before embarking on his career. While the higher academy would be more traditional, and expected, the lesser school badge is not an anomoly.

I don't know the rugulations concerning the uniforms in the Russian Federation, but compared to the Soviet one, this uniform appears to be the one for the parade... so the ribbon bars might have been attached before the sale, as Marc thought... no?

Should there really be WWII commemorative ribbons? Wasn't it just the 1965 "20 years of Victory" that was issued to all personell, while the later ones, 1975 and 1985, were issued only to veterans (splitted into Warrior and Labour versions)?

I believe that regardless of previous education, once a person got promoted to the higher ranks without regards to their branch of service, they had to attend the GenShtab Academy, and therefore received the white rhomb upon graduation. I have personally nover seen any General or Admiral wearing anything else than a white rhomb.

1. the navy did not have a semi-formal holiday uniform like generals, who had the grey holiday uniform; they would use a uniform that was the same as parade, but with ribbons, and no belt.

2. there was no actual need to attend the GSA to become an admiral or general. I have only seen the 'blue' badge on a few other generals uniforms, including a nice air general i used to have. Again, the white is more common, but no, it is not required.

ps-I am not a medals guy, but I could have sowrn that active service officers got the WWII comm. medals as well as vets. Not sure; if not, then it gives more evidence that the ribbons are fine.

Look at what I found on the NATO website :idea : we can see a rear admiral of the Russian Federation (09.11.2000) wearing his work uniform, on which he has 8 ribbons, without any WWII commemorative medal :

maybe its my eyes, but he looks like a fleet admiral; one large star. I might be mistaken, but looks bigger than a rear admirals star.
