Medal "For Special Service To The Defence Of Social Order And State".

Next, two variations of the Medal for Distinguished Services in Defense of the Social Order and the Country (Medalia "Pentru servicii deosebite aduse în apãrarea orânduirii sociale ºi de stat"). First the RPR version which was awarded between 1953 and 1965. This is the elusive silver (rather than silver plated) variant. Note that the case has no award name on the cover.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

Now, the RSR version (1965-1989)... the medal itself is not particularly rare, but to have it in the case with the ribbon bar is somewhat unusual.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

My most recent acquisition... a post 1965 (RSR) Medal for Distinguished Services in Defense of the Social Order and the Country- a Securitate award- in box with the ribbon. I got it on Okazii- the Romanian equivalent of eBay (as far as I can tell)- with the help of a friend who lives there. Am still looking for the document.

The second image is of the outside of the presentation box with award name in gold. I have now seen the box for this award in tan, teal and red.

Close-ups of the medal (needs cleaning - sorry, it's tombac, not silver - that one is coming next). The pictures make the condition look worse than it is.

I also haven't a clue what it says on the reverse except for the words that are similar to English.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

Nice collection, Phil! This particular medal shows a fair amount of tarnish on virtually every example I've seen. Don't know that I would clean it- might go down to the bronze fairly quickly... be careful. The type on the back is the actual title of the medal; a translation would be, "For Distinguished Services in Defense of the Social Order and the State". Romanian, of course, is a romance language- sounds very Italian/Spanish when you hear it spoken- and has Latin as a root. This accounts for the similarities to English words.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

And here is is: The first picture was with a flash so you can see it is silver (solid apparently), but the others were taken by lamp light to avoid missing details washed out by a flash which is why it looks rather "gold."

This one, in my opinion is far nicer looking and has the bonus of the Soviet style five-sided suspension. I take it this one came before the other, correct?

To my mind, this one is as sharp and crisp with details as any Soviet medal which makes me wonder if it was not made in Moscow or somewhere similar. The other version (white rectangular hanger in the post above) is not nearly as nice a piece of workmanship to my eyes.

I'm happy:D

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

Phil,

There are 3 versions of this medal and yes, the one you now have is the first. As it is an RPR (Peoples' Republic of Romania) medal, it would date prior to 1965. From 1966-1968, the medal remained the same except the medal bore the initials "RSR" (Socialist Republic of Romania). Then, in 1968, the medal went to the 4 sided suspension with a new ribbon which has been featured earlier in this thread.

I have a document for this medal (as well as a doc for the post '68 medal as well) on the way from Romania. When they arrive, I'll be sure to post.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

As promised, a couple of documents for the Medal for Distinguished Services in Defense of the Social Order and the Country (Securitate). These documents are for the first (a medal I have) and second (a medal I don't have) of three variations of this award. I have posted photos of the first variation earlier in the thread but have brought it out for the first image as a reminder.

This award was to Lieutenant Constantin Duca and was made on August 19, 1954 (I was about 5 and a half months old at the time:D). It is award number 262; quite early as this award did not begin until 1953. Note a space, on the inside left, for a photo and signature. Neither of these spots was touched- remember, this is a Securitate award. These areas were eliminated in future documents. A nice touch, common to award booklets of the RPR period, is a colour band mimicking the ribbon on the outside cover.

Re: Rarely Seen Securitat Medals

This next document is for the same award, but from the transitional period of 1966-1968 (second variation). As I said, I don't have this medal, but it looks the same as the medal shown, ribbon and all, except the State seal will have RSR on the lower banner and, just below the State seal, will have larger letters RSR (instead of RPR). Both the medal and the document are quite rare. Also of note: notice how the doc has become "simplified"- more "secretive". Only a decree number (170 A) and the year (1966) and the name of the recipient (Colonel Adrian Pop- during the RSR years, it became more common to place the family name second whereas during the RPR period they stuck with the more culturally Romanian way of placing the family name first). The outside is plain, bearing only the word "legitimatie" or license.

Here is the Medal "For Special Service To The Defence Of Social Order And State" (Medalia „Pentru Servicii Deosebite Aduse În Apărarea Orânduirii Sociale Şi De Stat“) which was founded by The Council Of Ministers decree #1227 of 4th June 1968.
