1919 Polish Artillery badge ID help
I don't know where else to look for info so I thought you guys might be able to help me. I have a badge in my posession that I am trying to ID, I believe it to be a badge from the Polish 18th Artillery battery dated 1919. The question I have is: is it original or a reproduction? I have only been able to find one photo of the badge online and it is on the website of the manufacturer named on the back (who sells modern reproductions), I can not find a photo of an original, OR a description of the back of an original. What do you guys think? The owner of the badge wants me to sell it for him but I do not want to advertise it if I don't know whether or not it is a repro. Thanks Sam.

without a good detailed photo of the front and back there is no way to answer your question. Seeing the badge is a must. Kind of like mail-order brides any other way. The description might not fit the actual item.

I will try again as soon as possible to post photos, I have used this type of forum software in the past with no problems but can't seem to get them on this time.

this looks as Polish pre WW2 unit badge. The screwplatwe seems OK, but I don't know about the badge itself. 1919 would be date of forming or an important battle (possibly during Polish-Soviet war or Silesian upprising) PAP letters may stand for Pułk Artylerii Przeciwpancernej (Anti-tank Artillery regiment) But in fact it can be anything. If You could send me some better scans via e-mail (al_muell(at)wp.pl), I could ask on polish forum. |

Here it is, no marks that I can see, and no marks on the inside of the screw plate, other than a design around the border. Sam.

Here are the first opinions:
Badge of the 18th Field Artillery Regiment (pulk Artylerii Polowej), later known as 18th Light Artillery Regiment (PAL). The date 1919 is the formation date of the regiment. The badge was introduced in 1929 in two versions. They wre usually produced by Gontarczyk's workshop. This one is most likely a copy, but better pics are needed. If You could scan this badge instead of fotographing it it would probably help as well as screwpost attachment detailed picture. Last edited by Al-muell; 04-17-2008 at 04:04 AM. |

As I understand it, and I would love to know more on the subject, most badges such as this that you find are fakes. The reasoning I have heard is that very few of these were used. Further, I understand that those that are real were made by jewlier-type establishments, so telling the difference between a genuine article and a jewlier-quality fake is almost impossible.
