G'day All,

Here are two examples of The Medal for Distinguished Service in Protecting the State Border of the USSR. The medal on the left is 33 mm in diameter and is 4 mm thick. It has a brass suspension plate.

The medal on the right is 30 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick and it has a two-piece, steel and brass suspension plate. Moreover, it appears to be either silver or silver plate.

QUESTIONS:

1. What are the proper diameter and thickness measurements for this medal?

2. Are size differences in the same type of medal common?

The Comprehsive Guide states it should be 32mm and without any size variations. The only variations are of the medal's content; silver, silver-plate and nickle silver.

Both look like cast copies to me.

G'day Marc,

Thanks for your comment. If they are indeed cast should there be a mould mark, i.e., line around the edge of the medal, or, perhaps some evidence of buffing indicating that such a line has been removed?

I don't like the lack of detail in the first and there's even more missing detail in the second - the machine gun is, well...very bad.:(

Jim,

No need for that line at all. As Phillip said, the general lack of details combined with some porous spots is way enough of a clue here ;)

Also the second example has patches of greenish material near some of the details such as the ear and machine gun which is indicative of fine casting sand. I believe we have seen this before on other cast copies.
