This soviet cavalry sword recently became a part of my collection!
Not only does it have a Khalkin Gol badge on the scabbard but also an inscription on the blade which states in Russian: "To Political commissar P.S. Polyschuk for the combat preparation and courage displayed during the battle of Khalkhin Gol. 1st October 1939. From the People's Commissar (Minister) of Defense of USSR." Fingers crossed for research on the original owner! |

Re: Shashka with link to Khalkin Gol
Unfortunately I can find any Politruks or Commissars (because no doubt he would have been promoted by 1945) by this name. There are a pair of P Polischuks. P. I. (Air force) and P. F. (Winter War veteran) but not the chap we are looking for. Then again P. S. may have taken a back seat during the Patriotic War.

Nice looking shashka Bob:thumbsup
Just wondering, how is the lettering made on the blade? Is it inlaid/soldered on letters of brass or some other metal, as it looks like there's lots of corrosion around the lettering, but not on the letters themselves. Definately not etched, that's all I can say from the pics. I am naturally sceptic to such blades, I have no comparison at all from other sources. Most gifts I have seen have had placards attached with enscribed greetings, or inscribed blades on (post war) daggers.
