According to the book there is a Kazak badge, but the look is diffrent from the other two. This has a guy with a showel holding a big flag with stalin in profile on it. He is standing next to a weat field and a canal... I have to get my scanner working! I feel my english is too poor to describe this one. Anyway the number issued is 15 004.. So it should be harder to find.

I saw this set of Borderguard badges.

Are these different variations or are some of them just fantasy items? Top two look real to me, but the bottom one has cheap look to it.

William

Note that one of them has KGB crest as separate attachment.

I know this is not the rarest item, but I was wondering how did the border guard might earn this badge. Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Distinguished Border Guard badge, Type 3, 1st Class.

Hi Matt,
your badge is the Distinguished Border Guard badge, Type 3, 1st Class.
Here is a bit of info on it with courtesy of Shawn.

The Distinguished, or Excellent, Border Guard badge has gone through several transformations. The first version was created in 1949, the second in 1964, and the final version, in two classes, in 1969. These badges were awarded by commanders of Border Guard Units and Districts, in the name of the Chief of the Border Guard directorate and the head of the KGB (from 1946 to 1957 MVD), to border guard personnel for displays of endurance, courage, and bravery while guarding the state borders.

Eddie.

I just obtained one as well with a document. Were they made by a mint? Is there information available on the web which would tell me what they are made of, how many were issued etc...

I also obtained a 2nd Class with document. The badge seems very light compared to the 1st class, so what metal is the 2nd class made of? Aluminium?

Guys,

These are made by the mint, not sure if only Moscow or both. Some variations have round Moscow mint mark on the back. Variations without the mm are slightly different and may be from Leningrad (just a guess).

2nd class is made of aluminium.

Have a look:

Here are two more variations of the 2nd class reverse:

"Hi Matt,
your badge is the Distinguished Border Guard badge, Type 3, 1st Class
."

Eddie,

Any possibility that you post here pics of the Type 1 and Type 2, 1st Class? Or maybe a link if allowed?
How many Types exist for 1st Class?
And what about the 2nd Class?
Only the 1st and 2nd Class exist or are there more Classes?

Thanks a lot.

"My second class has that mark but not my first class."

Danny,

On my case that's exactly the opposite, my 1st Class has that MM but not the 2nd Class!

Alexei,

Can you please help clarifying this?

Thanks a lot,

Dolf

Alexei,

It's about the fact that in my case it's the 1st Class Badge that have a MM and not the 2nd Class Badge while in the case of Danny it seems to be exactly the opposite!
Does it mean that both Classes do exist with or without the MM?

Thanks a lot,

Dolf
