Union Of Societies Of Assistance To Defence And Aviation-Chemical Construction Badges
I recently bought the following badge. I was wondering if anyone could tell me something about 'OSOAVIAHIM', which was the 'Society for support to Aviation and Chemical Defense'. Was this also know as the ODVF, or was this a different organization?
Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

OSOAVIAKHIM
According to the Soviet Military Encyclopedic Dictionary, this society was founded in 1927 as a "volunteer society for the masses" with the purpose of joint development of aviation industry, increasing general military preparedness amongst the populace, and civil defense. Comment: it was the forerunner of the popular DOSAAF organization that trained youth in skills as flying, parachuting and tank-driving.

Thanks. I was wondering when someone might finally answer my question. I was beginning to think I was the only one interested in badges!
Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

Badges
No, you're not the only won interested in badges. I find the various Soviet badges rather fascinating myself. After collecting Soviet medals for a while, you reach a point where your desires exceed your finances.

Shane,
I don't think this badge goes with this document. The badge is a minor award for active participation in the Osoaviakhim activities, and the document is just a membership card. Alexei |

I think that Alexei is right about it being a mebership book and not an issue document.
OSOAVIAKHIM - the All-Union Voluntary Society for Co-operation with the Aviation and Chemical Industries was an amalgamation of several serparate organizations of which I think the OVDF was one. One of its key functions was to assist the state with the pre-conscription training of Soviet youth, the maintenance of military skills for demobilzed conscripts and the fostering, in the 1920s and 30s, of technical skills - driving, flying, parachuting, etc. There are many different OSOAVIAKHIM badges. Most are qualification badges awarded for finshing training courses such as the famous "For chemical defence", "For first aid" and "Voroshilov's Rifles" badges. Some are membership badges. Shane's is very nice in that it is an Activist's badge. It is awarded to a member who is very active - likely giving training course and/or recruiting members. Shawn |

Very nice!! There were so many of these badges issued that it is a wonder that so few issue booklets survive.

Yep
Yes, you are correct and that’s why I liked it. The book is in a fairly healthy condition for its age and composition, but I imagine that the holders of this badge thought no real reason to keep the book as it held no privileges.
Cheers Chris |
