Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Eric,

Wrong digits for a duplicate, badly stamped.

That's a telltale bad sign I believe.

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Here's one that has a very different look.
The patina is just plain weird.
No evidence of enamel at all.
The detail on (the bad scans of) the rifle are lacking.
The number looks reasonable but again there are repeating digits.
I did my best with the ring but I had little to work with to begin with.
What say you? :)

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Eric,

Based on what I can see from the pictures, it's OK, just very worn and possibly silver plated quite some time ago.

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

I agree with Alexei, it looks as though it may have been silver plated a long time ago.

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Why would a silver medal be silver plated ??? That's just plain nuts.

For the same reason they plate gold chains with gold - so that it shines better :)

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Any chance of enamel under the plating you think?
And if so, how to un-plate?

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

No chance of enamel there, no. Don't try to un-plate it (love the word!) - it was done by the recipient and should be preserved in the original condition. That's my opinion anyway

Re: Fake Medals for Combat Service

Interesting question Eric. There is a set of mine that I posted a while back that has been silver plated.

http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...present-3.html

All 3 awards have been done by the family or veteran.
