Flag of Victory in GPW will lose it's symbols
I'm speachless - Russian deputats just passed project for the law that offical Flag of Victory in Great Patriotic War will be striped of all symbols, except the Star:
kp.ru // Ñî Çíàìåíè Ïîáåäû âñå-òàêè óáðàëè ñåðï è ìîëîò If President Putin signs the proposed - it will become the law. What's next - stripping existing Soviet awards of hammer and sicle? William |

Kind of reminds me of that book "The Vanishing Commissar" or something like that about how people disappeared from Soviet visual media over time. If we don't like the past, we just rewrite it! So much change and so much stays the same.

Only the star??? Thats not stripping the flag. They're just replacing it with a Russian Army Flag aka Yeltsin's Victory Banner (shown below). But its still sad to see it go.

Guys
It is normal for Russia (Soviet Union). Look at their history. Nothing changed, just different names and tytles. As soon as new government comes, they distroy everything behind. From my personal life experience, it is not only on government level. It was always their life style. Destroying - you prove that you are better. I hope Putin will not sign it. If he signs, he is not any different from this bunch of idiots. Eric |

Just my two pesos...
I have never agreed with any kind of banning, and my dissaproval is higher when it comes to symbols. Banning a H&S or a Hakenkreuz won´t make a government who banns these symbols any better than the repressive regimes they try to erase from their history; in fact, they just do the same as those regimes did. History (and especially the darkest times of it) repeats itself... And the countries´s labor should be -at least, to do all they can- to avoid those"dark times" from showing up once more. A good way to do it is to keep those symbols (and thus, the memory) to remind people and to teach future generations how necessary is to take consciousness that that kind of events should never happen again for the sake of themselves and the rest of mankind.

This story reminds me recent intiative of German government to strip Adolf Hitler of German citizenship.
Whatever happened - is already history and no matter what we ban or take away from dead people - it will not bring millions of dead back. There's ironic ending in Hitler's story - it can not be done, as some German law forbids taking away someone's citizenship if the person will be left without any citizenship at all. Apparently Hitler renounced his Austrian citizenship when he was running for elections in Germany in the 1930s. Imagine someone in Russia gets equally brilliant idea to take away citizenship from Stalin or Ivan the Terrible William |

It was actually an honorary citizenship of a town that will soon be hosting an EU meeting. Technically the citizenship expired when he committed suicide, but I guess they wanted to clean up the ambiguity pre-emptively.
