Badge "I Congress Youth Of Croatia".

Greetings All,

I have this picture of a very young Yugoslav Partisan. Can anyone tell me what badge is on his shirt pocket, and what the three stars stand for.
He is wearing a beretta on his leftside facing backwards and a star on his hat.

How about posting the complete picture, it would be interesting to see.
I do not know what that badge is, but as to the stars, I'd guess that it might be showing rank.

I would also guess that it's a bit unussula indication of the rank of kapetan

I guessed that he was an officer, because he had a pistol.
Could the badge be the PARTIZANSKA SPOMENKA that had to be returned to the Yugoslav goverment after the war?

Hello Ray and welcome,

This is how Shawn describes the partizanska spomenka badge.
It was awarded only to partisans who fought with Tito since the beginning of the war - 1941. The Type II is well known. It is a large silver and gold star with a partisan holding a banner and was made by Inkom of Zagreb beginning in the 1950s. However, the Type II badge was made to replace the Type I which was made in the 1940s by the Leningrad Mint. It is a stamped bronze and enamel red star with a partisan and banner (very different design from the Type II) in the middle. It has 1941 stamped on it. It is extremely rare because all partisans, and even their widows, were ordered to turn them in during the early 1950s and were re-issued Type IIs. Hardly any Type Is survived this “purge”.)

The story goes that He might have been Tito's driver during the war.

Btw. Are this stars austro-hungarian? I think before the war Yugoslavia used german style "nails" (I don't know official name, that's what they are called here) and after the war - five-armed stars.

Hi Ray!

It is very interesting photo of a partisan officer. It seems that the badge he is wearing, is composed from a kind of wreath and a sword over a star. I have never seen a photo of a partisan with such badge yet. There are also no information about such badge in literature of partisan badges which I owned.

I'm also interested to find out what that badge is. I sugest that you publish your photo also on some other forums. I can asked for you on slovenian and croatian collectors forums, of course if you agree with my suggestion and with publishing of your photo on these forums. It will be usefull if you can provide large photo of his hat star and of the inscription in the lower right corner. I would also like to ask you if it is possible to find out where and when the photo was taken (is there any marking or stamp of the photographer or photo studio on the picture).
