The suspension is, of course, COMPLETELY wrong (and for that reason, I was reluctant to post this, but there was such major confusion in another thread . . .). I am left wondering what the suspension belongs to, though.

I believe this is the third-level general good-guy civilian/labor medal (1. Glory, 2. Dedication, then 3. Honesty).

I have never been able to get a better identification. Help?

The Khalq was a faction of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. The other faction was Parcham (= "Flag"). From April 1978 until December 1979 (the Soviet arrival in country) they dominated the government.

Here are the data for this medal:

Measurements taken from 3 medals

Diameter: 38mm +.15 -0
Weight: 22g, +/-0.5
Small connecting ring diameter: 5.6mm +/- .1
Thickness: Varies greatly all around the medal between 2.1 to 2.6 mm
Top of cog gear: Varies greatly between 5.40 to 6.1mm
Bottom distance between cog gears: Varies greatly between 4.3 to 4.8mm

- The silver color plating/paint (s) is applied to the cog on the left side of the medal. It is also applied on the rim of the medal and the reverse of the small connecting ring. The cut out betwen the cogs is not plated/painted.
- The medal seems to have a bronze color plating on both sides. I am not sure what the base metal is, but it looks like a nickle alloy.
