This dark blue cap was a part of a larger headwear lot I purchesed last year.
It seems to be a visor cap for the courrier service.
The only information I have found are here:
http://www.vedomstva-uniforma.ru/mundir1...index.html
indicating it's Latvian "special communications"
and here:
http://undertheredstar.com/Communications.htm
- I have tried to contact the author but no luck.
The cap itself seems to be some sort of authentic soviet-made visor cap from 1970. It has standard Army buttons.
Any thoughts?

A recent purchase - M43 shoulderboards for the technician lieutenant (at some later point upgraded to Engineer-lieutenant) of the traction service.

Many moths probably grew fat on these boards.

Any opinions on the second star? It's definitely later, but could it be an original addition? After all, the next uniform reform for the railways was in 1947 (and I think that shoulderboards were abolished in 1954) and with the time of service in one rank for the mid-grade command personnel being 4 years, even if the guy started his service in the rank in 1943, he could get the second star after the reform. However, it may as well be a very stupid addition made by one of the sellers when tehse made it to the market.

Any suggestion what function could the owner have had? Something like later machinist 3rd/2nd class?

Close-up on the stars...

The buttons are standard Army type, however, since they are of the type typical typical for the period (3-piece, flat brass unpainted reverse and separate ring), so I find it possible that they were originally used with these boards, even though it was against the regulations.

I have recently aquired this pair thinking that they are some sort of navy boards (seemed to be black with pale-blue or pale green piping). Instead, they turned out to be something different, as they are dark green with pale blue piping (for sure the colour has faded), and are definately not military ones. So I believe that the buttons are not original to them.
What can they be?
The colour scheme seems to fit forestry, railway or financial-related services, but I didn't come across any picture of sholderboards like these ones.
Can anyone help identyfying them?

Some questions for the boards on rimmed (as typically seen with chinstraps and tunic buttons) vs. domed shoulder board buttons for the late war and postwar (to 1958) Red Army and NKVD/MVD, etc. officer tunics. Contemporary collection items (though you never know without close inspection if the buttons have been replaced) and period photos seem to sjggest both styles side by side in the late war years.

- Did one style of button precede the other in production?
- If so, round about which years did each enter service?
- When did each tend to leave service?
- For M1947 MVD/ security service era until 1958, was one style more prevalent than the other?

Hoping to get a better handle on this admittedly arcane issue for dating purposes and simple curiosity.

The still photo is dated 1957 so given the "new" prescriptions about uniforms of the soviet diplomatic corps (1954) no one below minister 2 rank had uniform. I'm pretty sure it's not related from the CD.
Is it a doorkeeper uniform?!

I am trying to match this cap with a tunic.

Cap: Based on my limited knowledge, this cap is for both winter service and parade wear. The gold cords and lack of metal leaves on the visor indicates it was for junior officer. Interior maker's label has stamped inscription from the factory "Fabrika Golovnykh Uborov", City Odessa, Ukraine SSR, and the year of manufacture, 1991.

Tunic:
For Navy junior officer (lieutenant)
with black background shoulder boards
not sure the year, but seems to be 1980s

Does it look legit (USSR period, not post Soviet made) and does it fit with the cap?
