Civil War Coin Silver Ring with Gold Washed Shield & Hand Chasing. Size 9 3/4.:
$95.00
For sale is a Union soldier's coin silver signet ring. It has a gold washed Federal shield with hand chasing and is marked "COIN" on the inside of the band. The shield could represent the soldier's loyalty to the Union cause, duty and honor. The initial "W" or "M" is also scratched inside the band. It was probably purchased from a sutler. Signet rings are usually worn on the pinky finger and were very popular during the war as evidenced in numerous period images of soldiers on both sides. In the iconic Gettysburg photograph of three captured Rebs standing by a rail fence; two are wearing pinky rings. This ring was recently acquired in Vermont. This is an uncommon non-dug personal item that could be worn today if you choose to. My everyday wear includes a silver spoon ring dug in a CS camp in northern Virginia. It provides me with a constant sense of connection to the past and my ancestors who fought for the South.
