Item Description:I am pleased to offer this original hand-made heirloom Japanese army officers Samurai sword from World War 2. Theblade represents the opportunity to own a historic Gendaito katana by the well-known swordsmith Ikeda Yasumitsu from the famous Yasukuni school, with high end Shin Gunto mounts that include a family mon and tassel on thehandle. This is a special sword that has it all for a collector of WW2militaria or Japanese swords.

The blade and the mountings are both in Near MINT condition. It is a healthy sword and has a bladelength of 27 inches (69cm). It shows a ko-mokumehada that is tight and well-crafted. The hamon is a Rai-style ko-choji based on suguha that is present the length of the blade ending in a maru boshi. The nioi guchishowcases fine nie that descend into the hamon and there are activitieslike ko-ashi in and around the hamon.

The tang is signed Yasumitsuand dated Showa Jyu Ichi Nen HachiGatsu Kichi Jitsu, or a lucky day in August 1936. Yasumitsu was a very well-regarded gendaito swordsmith of the famous Yasukuni school. The Yasukuni school was a group of thirteenswordsmiths chosen to make high quality gendaito on the grounds of the Yasukunishrine during the pre-war and war years. Yasukuni swords are sought out fortheir exceptional craftsmanship.

The mountings are Type 98 ShinGunto and in Near MINTcondition. The tsuka is silk-cord wrapped with cherry blossom menuki. There is avery small amount of fraying around one menuki. The tsuka also shows a family mon along the backstrap. The monis the famous sasa, or bamboo leaves, used by clans such as the Inaba.A company grade officer’s blue/brown tassel is attached to the tsuka. The tsuba is classic WW2 with acomplete set of eight accompanying metal seppa. The saya (scabbard) is a higherquality lacquered brown with a smooth finish. The saya is in excellentcondition, showing some scratches and scattered small spots of missing finish, while retaining roughly 92-96%original finish. The locking mechanism is present. The blade is in Near MINT condition. There are no nicks, little to no rust, and very few small scratches. There are no major flaws like hagire.

Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, desirability of Yasukuni swords, reputation of the swordsmith, andoutstanding condition of the blade and mounts, I highly recommend this sword to a collector of Japanese swords orWWII militaria.
