VERY RARE *1840 Medical Staff Sword Civil War.
Here is a sword that you don't see offered very often these days. This is the original Civil War Medical Staff officer sword. Officially known as the US model 1840 Medical Staff sword this is the classic style that was worn by the doctors and surgeons of the Civil War era. You can still see most of the etching on each side of the blade, although tough in some areas. The front side of the blade has the "U.S. Medical Staff" in the center with the floral designs on each side. On the back of the blade it has the floral design with the Union Eagle in the center. The sword has a beautifully ornate handle and cross guard. The cross guard has the shield in the center and as you can see it still has the integrally cast "MS" letters. These letters stand for the medical service branch of the Union army. The cast brass handle has the beautiful droop wing style Union Eagle. The Eagle holds the arrows of war in one talon in the branch of peace and the other. At the very top of the sword it is all held together by the tang nut that is designed in the form of an acorn. All of the brass is beautiful as you can see in the pictures. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is constructed entirely of brass. The scabbard still retains the original throat and all three of the original sword hanger rings as well as the drag on the bottom of the sword scabbard. As you can see the mounts and drag have the beautiful designs to accentuate the sword itself. As seen in the pictures, the sword does have a couple small punctures, and a crease on the reverse side of the scabbard. These do not affect the way the sword displays at all (see pic 12). If you wanted an original Civil War Medical Staff officer sword that displays superbly than this one is for you.
