These beautiful buttons are decorated with the Imperial Tsarist Coat of Arms displayingthe two-headed eagle and the mounted figure of St. George figure slaying the dragon- patron Saint of Moscow and Russia.

Russia entered the Great War with the largest army in the world at the time (1914) with 1,400,000 fully mobilized soldiers swelling its ranks. The Russian army engaged in brutal combat against the German empire at infamous battle such as Tannenberg and Galicia with most taking place over modern day Poland, Hungary and Ukraine. Exhausted and out of strength whilst simultaneously dealing with serious internal issues with the October Communist Revolution of 1917,the Soviet Governmentissued a decree of peaceinsisting that all belligerent powers open immediate negotiations for a democratic peace. It is estimated that between900,000 and 2,500,000 Russians were killed in the war.
