1863 Manuscript 10th Kentucky Cavalry Pay Order

Offered for yourconsideration is a small, manuscript document ordering the paymaster to diverta private’s pay to one of his commanding officers (the reason for this requestis not given, though it may be to repay a loan or possibly to send home for hisfamily). Written from “Head Quarters / Camp Near Owingsville, Ky”on “June6th 1863”, the body of this document states that “Thepaymaster will please pay to R. M. Taber, Lieut in Co. L, 10 Regment Ky Cavalrythe amount that may be coming to me the undersigned A private in sd. aboveNamed Co.”. At the lower right is the name of “Eli F. Prather”, with an“X”and “hismark” at the center (apparently, the soldier could not write, possiblyproviding a reason for the officer receiving the money for the soldier). At thelower left is “Att / R G Scott”, undoubtedly signing toverify that Prather was actually present and applied his “X”. The back of thedocument was originally blank, though it now bears the notation “EliPrather” at one end to identify the inner contents. Documents of thistype are not very common, especially when involving a Kentucky unit. This piecewould look great framed with a period illustration from this unit or one of aUnion cavalry campground. Great pay related item.

Cursory researchindicates that all of the individuals mentioned in the document served inCompany L, 10th Kentucky Cavalry. It is interesting to note, however, that the Lieutenant Taber noted in the document is listed on the rollsas John R. Taber, not the R. M. Taber written on the piece. The R. G. Scott whoverified the signature is listed as Sergeant Ransdell G. Scott on the roster.

The 10thKentucky Cavalry served the majority of its one-year term scouting andoperating against guerrillas in central Kentucky. It was raised betweenSeptember and November, 1862, their first skirmish occurring in the formermonth. They participated in the expedition to East Tennessee from December 24,1862 through January 1, 1863, and in operations against Cluke’s forces fromFebruary 18th through March 5th. They were present duringoperations against Pegram from March 22nd until April 1st,Everett’s Raid in Eastern Kentucky from June 13th through the 23rd,and against Scott’s forces from July 25th until August 6th.The regiment was mustered out on September 17, 1863. During its term ofservice, the regiment had 13 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 1officer and 61 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total loss of 75 men.

The presently offeredspecimen exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of less thanideal storage. Light toning is present across the entire surface, somewhat moreprominent along the folds and at the edges (this is especially noticeable alongthe right edge). Significant soiling is noted on the back, especially in thelower left corner. Numerous folds, both horizontal and vertical, are noted, asare several prominent wrinkles. Three of the edges are irregular (the one atthe left is straight), while the one at the right is also ragged. One smallarea of paper is missing at the lower right. The contrast is average for thisperiod, with all text legible (the difficulty in reading is due to poorpenmanship). While not of the highest condition, this piece, measuring 3⅛ x 7¾inches, would make a great addition to any Civil War collection. Worthy offurther research.
