Book Description: Anonymous [Joseph Barber], War Letters of a Disbanded Volunteer, Embracing His Experiences as Honest Old Abe’s Bosom Friend and Unofficial Adviser. New York: Frederic A. Brady, 1864, 312 pages plus publisher’s ads. Approximately 5 ¼” x 7 ½”. First Edition. Gilt illustration on textured boards. Cloth on spine is tattered and front cover loose with rear cover also beginning to separate. Decent binding and clean pages. Apart from covers, in fair condition. This volume contains a selection of letters, purportedly published in a newspaper, dealing with the point of view of a Northern volunteer in the Union Army. Written in highly eccentric phonetic spelling, it is heavy in both philosophy and moral commentary.
