1865 ConfederateGeneral Pierre T. Beauregard Document
Up for sale is a February 13, 1865, period copy of correspondencefrom General Pierre G.T. Beauregard’s Chief Quartermaster, Major Edward Willis, toBeauregard regarding contracting to pay for government supplies with cotton.General Beauregard, who was commanding the army opposing General Sherman hadjust left Augusta, GA and arrived in Columbia, SC where the document was sent. Beauregardgave the order for Lt. General Hardee to evacuate Charleston, SC,three days later as General Sherman was marching north and couldn’t be stopped. Beauregard was replaced by General Joseph E. Johnston on February 22 in aneffort to stop Sherman. The document is signed by General Beauregard’s AAG,Lt. Col. John M.W. Otey. Ironically, Major Edward Willis became a cottonmerchant after the war.
What a great piece of Confederate/Civil War memorabilia andan excellent addition to any Civil War collection.
