2053----WWII 1945 Cyrus + Mattie Bates censored letters Northfield Greenfield MA 2053----WWII 1945 Cyrus + Mattie Bates censored letters Northfield Greenfield MA Description Great lot of 5 letters between Cyrus + Mattie Bates, brother and sister who are both in the US Navy.
The letters are from the final year in the war 1945 and all typewritten from Cyrus to Mattie.
Cyrus is onboard the USS LCI (L) 1071 and Mattie is an Ensign as a nurse at US Naval Hospital in Chelsea MA.
From my research, I believe there to be as many as three more siblings in the service. The do write of "Guy" in the letters, who was an older brother.
The family was originally from Willisten VT. Both parents died while the children were very young.
Cyrus was then living in Northfield MA, and Mattie was in Greenfield MA.
The letters contain the usual service life, family life, etc.
I am showing some of the blurbs and other info I found while researching. Please take a look.
These items are NOT included with the letters, but the buyer is welcome to print them out.
One letter is very significant as Cyrus speaks of the end of the war and the celebration that ensued.
Another letter concerns Cyrus finding out that Mattie is now in the Navy and outranks him.
All five letters are typewritten and include their original censored stamped envelopes.
Interesting to note that one letter actually has a word removed by the censor, a reference to the designation of a ship in Borneo. Overall the letters are in VG condition, and the envelopes show the expected wear.
I have scanned parts of all the letters and envelopes for your review.
