Details
3 excellent letters, one handwritten, 2 typed, from a British sailor visiting Hiroshima, Japan in 1946.
'Hiroshima itself is absolutely flat, apart from the straggling, dirty suburbs, you can see right accross Hiroshima from one side to the other by just climbing on the nearest heap of rubble, as it is built on flat ground at the foot of the mountains. Although many shacks are springing up in the ruins, and trams run down what must once have been the main street, there is still the effect of total devastation, only these shells of steel and concrete buildings lying in a nine square mile area. Huge rusty safes, broken open mark what must have been the business centre. Pieces of glass have have been bent and fused together by the terrific heat. As the bomb was exploded in the air above the town, there is no crater. When you think that this was once an industrial town the size of Sheffield, reduced to three buildings, and even nearly a year afterwards, a shanty town of salvaged wood & tin, you can easily realise the terrific power of the atom bomb. That was one plane carrying just one bomb, now rendered obsolete by later & more powerful ones. Even at the present stage of development I dare say half a dozen fully loaded planes would reduce London to a ruin like Hiroshima. I think we have seen the last war fought with tanks and guns, as bows and arrows would be just as useful against atomic energy...'.
