ANTIQUE WW2 US ARMY LAZY DOG BOMB LATHE-TURNED STEEL KINETIC MISSILE ARTILLERY RARE!
Get your hands on a piece of history with this rare and fascinating Lazy Dog Bomb artifact from World War II.
As can be read in the Wikipedia article on \"Lazy Dog (bomb)\" to which I contributed a lot of photos and research to back in 2008, these experimental weapons were used as anti-personnel and light skin vehicle weapons, capable of reaching speeds of up to 500 mph and penetrating up to 20 inches of solid material such as overhead cover.
The solid steel projectiles were dropped from aircraft using a Mark 44 Cluster Adapter filled with hundreds of these individual bomblets packed into heavy paper sacks, and were known for their ability to cover large areas without leaving any dangerous residue.
There were two variants produced:
ForgedThe first was a forged style which you can identify by the slightly rounded tip and the dull gray surface appearance. These forged models were parkerized which gave them a dull gray appearance and prevented rusting until the projectiles were deployed.
Lathe-TurnedThe later models were produced with a lathe turning process which you can identify by the relatively sharp tip and a shiny surface with slight tooling lines visible around the body of the projectile. The later lathe-turned units were coated with a brown cosmoline material to prevent rusting during shipment and storage.
