Up for sale is a nice Victorian era British Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer’s Sword and scabbard. The plated blade is approximately 32.5 inches long, which is the Infantry length. The blade is 1 inch wide at the guard, making it a “Medium Infantry” model. Overall length is approximately 39 inches. With the scabbard, it it approximately 40 inches. We are not sure of the age. It is likely late 1800s to very early 1900s. It still has its original wire wrapped leather handle. The edge has never been sharpened and has almost no nicks.
At the ricasso of the blade is the proof disc/proof slug, verifying that the blade passed strict tests for strength and flexibility. (The blade is still very flexible)! It is marked with a “T,” indicating it was likely made by London sword maker, Thurkle & Sons. Surrounding the proof disc is the “Star Of Damascus” to indicate high quality steel was used. At 13 7/8ths inches from the hilt, are the light percussion marks (one on each side). That is to show maximum cutting force on the blade.
The blade is silver or nickel plated with ornate engraving. In the middle of the blade is the Royal Cypher, “VRI,” indicating it was made for colonial service (likely India).
