Civil War Model 1850 Staff & Field Officers Sword with Scabbard. Blade marked \"Tomes, Son & Melvain. New York\" and on the reverse at the ricasso there is \"Iron Proof\" over a tombstone mark. The brass guard has a \"US\" with an eagle. The pommel, grip and guard are loose. Has a Silver grip. The majority of the twisted wires are complete, one strand is loose and may be incomplete. The etched blade is straight, unsharpened, a few light nicks, some light age spots scattered throughout, and the tip is missing about a 1/4\". The leather washer is a replacement. The scabbard is solid with no dents/dings, has brass mounts, and the drag piece has some dings. Length of the blade is 31 3/4\" (1 1/16\" wide and 5/16\" thick), the sword is 37 1/2\", and in the scabbard it is 38 1/2\".
This sword is from 1859 to 1864 based on the maker\'s mark.
