Confederate Texas Manuscript Tax Receipt – 1863

Offered for yourconsideration is a manuscript receipt for the payment of taxes in Texas duringthe Civil War. The document states that there was “Recd of Elisha Allen four 50/100Dollars in full of his non resident State & County Tax for the year 1862 onhis lands in others counties this the 30 May 1863”. It is signed by “M WWorthington” in his capacity as “assessor & Collector” for “WCounty” (Williamson County). Based on the hand-writing, it appears thatWorthington penned the receipt, as the letter formation is the same. The backof the piece is blank. It is accomplished in period ink on lined blue paper, apparently from a ledger. It is interesting that the total taxes due ends in afractional amount, as neither the Confederacy nor the state of Texas issued anycoinage (the Confederates would issue a 50¢ note beginning in 1863). Presumably, this amount would have been paid in either Federal coinage (Union), fractionalcurrency, or foreign silver. An interesting situation regarding the payment oftaxes, with a fractional amount and the fact that it is for non-resident land(in other counties).

Cursory research indicatesthat Elisha Allen was born on December 16, 1813 in Louisiana, though he movedwith his family to what is now Orange County, Texas in 1827. He fought at theSiege of Bexar, December 5-9, 1835, during the Texas Revolution. In 1838, Allenwas part of a survey team that explored the Texas frontier. He apparently livedin Williamson County from 1850 through 1870, after which he settled on IndianCreek in Bell County. Elisha Allen died on March 6, 1893.

The presently offereddocument exhibits signs of period use and subsequent long-term storage. Toningis noted across the entire surface, though this is heavier at the edges. Severalfolds are noted on the document, with the most significant being at the center, both vertical and horizontal. The contrast is sharp and bold, with all of thetext fully legible (some may be difficult to read due to poor penmanship). Itappears that this document was written on a piece of paper torn from the bottomof the ledger page, as the top is extremely uneven while the other three arefairly straight. Measuring approximately 2.75 (at its tallest) x 7.25 inches, this piece would make a great addition to any Texas or Civil War eracollection.

A $4.95 charge will beadded for postage and insurance.

If you have anyquestions concerning this document, please ask before purchasing.
