Excellent Imperial German Model 1835 Fusilier Sabre Etched Blade &Leather Sheath
This sword and its sheath are completely original, probably made in the 1870s-1880s.
Despite some surface tarnish and very mild pitting in a few areas on the blade, it is excellent condition. The etching is still quite easy to see. It's markings suggest it was for dress or parade use and was owned by an Imperial German infantry or artillery officer. There is a makers mark at the base of the blade but I have not identified it yet. It is a sheild topped my a crown, and within the shield is a symbol that looks like a Z.
The blade is steel and the guard is guilded brass. The grip is either silver or steel wrapped wire around leather of some sort (also in great shape). The sheath is leather with guilded brass fittings. The sheath also shows some wear and the leather has some scratching. There is also a small piece of red felt at the base of the blade (original to the sword) that was used to keep the sheath from scratching the guard when in use.
This sword is quite rare due to its condition, its matching sheeth, and because examples of this particular model are uncommon.
The leather has shrunk a bit with age so the blade does not fit all the way in. About 34mm (1.3in) remains unsheathed.
The sword is 92.1cm (36.25in) long.
The blade itself is 80cm (31.5in) long, 6mm (0.2in) wide, and up to 20mm (0.8in) spine-to-edge at the base.
The sheath is (33in) long, up to 13mm (0.5in) thick, and up to 26mm (1in) spine-to-edge.
