Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Authentic military falchion, short sword. Rare. Clearly, crispy marked by the maker August & Albert Schnitzler on the ricasso: "A&A.S" "1888". August & Albert Schnitzler C° of Solingen, Germany was in business from 1860s to 1873 – so, the ‘1888’ is a serial number. Also twice marked "(Crown)/H" on both the blade and the guard. Really massive, broad-bladed and hefty: OL= 25¼″ Blade= 19.5″ T/spine = 10+ mm ( ⅜ - 7/16″) W= 1⅝″ at the widest Actual weight: 3.4lbs/1.5 kg – i.e. twice of brass-hilted Saxon/Prussian hangers of 1800s. Unsharpened edge. No pitting. No scabbard. Original point. Genuine rich brown patina is commensurate with age: original, authentic patina. Never saw any cleaning attempts. One-piece solid-cast brass hilt includes an S-shaped crossguard. Massive pommel curving in Turkish fashion. Full tang w/exposed tang-sides & pins for the lower grip, and peened at the pommel. Blade has classic Falchion shape: broadened towards the tip. All tight and solid into the hilt. This sidearm combines the weight and power of an axe with the versatility of a saber. PROVENANCE: purchased years ago at a military antiques life-sale in NE USA. Overall: Design elements of both Badelaire, and Prussian Naval Sabre, cutlass for ratings c.1860s (Wagner, plate 47), and Saxon Seitengewehre Short Sword, and Baden Pioneer Short Sword (by W.SCHMOLZ & C°) – all followed this antique example of spectacular design & execution.
