The regiment guarded the upper Potomac River Valley, attached to \"Stonewall\" Jackson\'s command, taking part in the spring of 1862 in Jackson\'s Valley Campaign, where Turner Ashby became famous on both sides of the war and was mortally wounded.As part of the brigade, the 7th saw major action during the Gettysburg Campaign in 1863 and cavalry Battle of Brandy Station and in Jubal A. Early\'s failed Valley Campaigns of 1864 and were at Appomattox Courthouse, many members escaping through Union lines, returning home rather than taking parole with the rest of the Army of Northern Virginia.
