Italy: War Merit Cross to a Black Shirt with 1937 awarddocument. War Merit Cross awarded toPasquale Nicola Ciccarelli for service in Ethiopia (Africa Orientale). Ciccarelli was in a Camicia Nera (BlackShirt) unit, and was presumably wounded in action during his service. Theoriginal award document, dated 22 February 1937, states that the Cross wasawarded under Royal Decree number 1712, dated 2 July 1936: “extension of theapplication of the rules concerning the granting of the war merit cross and ofthe badges of honor for the mutilated and war wounded to personnel who from 3October 1935-XIII took part in military operations in East Africa.” Under this particular decree, Ciccarelli’s WarMerit Cross would have been awarded for a wound or mutilation received duringthe invasion of Ethiopia during or after October 1935. The cross is in very fine condition, on theoriginal ribbon. The award document isin overall fine condition, with the usual amount of wear and tear for adocument that has been handled over time. There is a 15 mm tear at the 6 o’clockposition (taped long ago on reverse side); a few old staple holes in the upperleft hand corner; and an obvious horizontal fold near the center of thedocument. The document has the impressedseal of the Ministry of War and the facsimile signature of Mussolini.
