This is original group of items from the Second World War that belonged to George Petro Jr who served in the United States Army and all came together from his estate. The items themselves are in great condition despite being nearly 80 years old. Included are three next-of-kin dog tags which are the third pattern models of US Army dog tags which are in the (1944-1945)format. Since the United States was trying to save money for the war effort they shortened information that was required on dog tags. These particular pieces have the name: George Petro Jr, serial #:46086044, Blood Type: O, Religion: Catholic. The ribbons signify that Petro served three years in the United States Army earning him the good conduct medal, periods of service in the American and European campaigns of war, and the World War ll victory medal for his service during the war. The hat is a US Army World War ll Garrison pipe which has blue piping indicating service in the Army Infantry. The man these items belonged to was George Petro Jr. who was born on Christmas Eve 1925(December 24, 1945) to Italian immigrants. Growing up in an Italian neighborhood Petro had a strong sense of community and when he was 18 registered for the US Selective Service. In 1943 George Petro Jr was drafted into the United States Army where he was assigned to an Army Infantry unit. The specifics of his service are not known of his service during World War ll but based on medals he earned he was likely sent over to Europe between 1944 and 1945.As part of the Allied effort to liberate Europe which saw some of the deadliest fighting during the Second World War. After serving honorably in the United States Army for 3 years at the war's end he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. I could not find much information later about the life of Petro but that he worked for Automatic Electric Co. in Northlake. He married Albina Petro and had many grandchildren. Unfortunately, George Petro passed away at the age of 65 on May 27, 1990, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Illinois. These are an amazing group of items from World War ll that as mentioned are in amazing condition despite being 80 years old and show the story of an American hero who served his country honorably during the Second War putting his life on his line in Europe for the freedoms we enjoy today. This would make a great gift for any history buff or a perfect addition to any collection.
