Partly-Printed Civil War Era Pulaski County, Arkansas Tax Receipt

Offered for yourconsideration is a small, partly-printed document acknowledging the receipt ofthe taxes paid by an individual in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The text of thedocument states that there was “RECEIVEDOF A. W. Lange The sum of $92 06/100 State, and $46 06/100 County Tax from the 15thof June 1864, to the 1st of February 1865.”. The signature of “J R RAdams” appears at the conclusion, signing in his capacity as “Sheriff and Collector.”. It is throughthis signature that the location of this receipt can be determined. Cursoryresearch seems to indicate that J. R. R. Adams assumed his position in April,1864. He continued to show up in official documents after the war, as well asthe census. One record indicates that he was the postmaster of the HiberniaPost Office in Pulaski County, though the date of this document is not known tothe seller. The back of this document was originally blank, though “1865”has been penciled near the left end (when this was done is unknown to theseller). At the time this document was issued, Pulaski County had been underUnion occupation, so it would be interesting to know how these funds were beingused by the county and state. An interesting little document, worthy of furtherresearch.

The presently offereddocument exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of subsequentstorage. Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to thepaper a beige to tan hue. Several darker stains can be seen, though these donot affect the legibility of the text. The document was printed in period inkon blue-lined white paper, with the manuscript additions being accomplished iniron gall ink. Several folds are present, the three primary ones somewhataffecting the integrity of the paper. The edges are irregular, with the top andbottom being somewhat ragged (it appears that this piece was torn from a largersheet). Measuring approximately 1⅞ x 8⅛ inches, this piece would make a greatresearch project for the local historian.
