Epaulettes on the jacket mean the rank of a KGB officer -colonel.The State Security Committee of the USSR, or KGB, was one of the most powerful agencies in the Soviet Union, responsible for national security, counterintelligence, foreign intelligence, combating dissent, protecting state borders, and information and ideological security.
The KGB was officially founded in 1954, although its predecessors had existed since the first years after the revolution. The organization took over many of the functions previously performed by such structures as the Cheka, NKVD, and MGB. The main task of the KGB was to ensure state security and combat "hostile elements" inside and outside the country.
The organization was not only engaged in intelligence and espionage, but also carried out mass operations against dissidents and ensured internal control over the population. During the Cold War, the KGB actively opposed Western intelligence agencies, and was also engaged in collecting information in favor of the USSR around the world.
For many, the KGB symbolizes the tight control and secrecy associated with the Soviet Union, and its work had a profound impact on the country's domestic and foreign policies until the collapse of the USSR in 1991.
