RARE 2 VOLUME BOOK SET, Antique 1862 Early "History of the Civil War, Illustrated", by John Abbott
Identified to Anna Louise Bisbee
DESCRIPTION: Very rare, very early antique 2 Volume contempory Civil War history book set that came out in 2 separate volumes that came out in 1862 and 1866.....THE FIRST ONE STILL IN THE MIDST OF THE WAR!!!
THIS SET IS PARTICULARLY RARE IN THAT IT CONTAINS BOTH VOLUMES, Volume I & Volume II of the original 2 volume set. Both are identified to the original owner in handwritten ink to ANNA LOUISE STANLY BISBEE which is particularly nice!!!
Volume I contains 21 chapters and 629 pages. Volume II contains 21 chapters and 507 pages. Each chapter contains about 25 engraved picture illustrations and maps. All chapters are fully outlined. Volume I contains actions from the start of the war up to June 1862, including the causes of the war, naval actions, and both Virginia and Western battlefields. Volume II contains actions at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancelorsville, Gettysburg and other campaigns in the last 3 years of the war.
This set contains incredibly thorough history and is very readable. ESPECIALLY USEFUL AND CURRENT AND ACCURATE AS IT WAS WRITTEN WHILE THE WAR WAS STILL BEING FOUGHT!!! AS FIRST HAND AN ACCOUNT AS YOU CAN GET!!!
Hard cover with gold lettering. Nicecondition overall. Volume I has excellent pages and binding and is in good condition, although the spine is missing and the front cover is loose. Volume II is in very good condition overall, with nice pages, binding, and covers. Both books measure 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" x 2" thick, and TOGETHER CONTAIN 1136 PAGES LONG!!
Great reading and an excellent early, primary reference while the war was still being fought and the combatants were still alive and directly involved.
The attached scans can not do the set justice, but hopefully will provide an idea of the content and condition and great potential reading/enjoyment.
Again, this is both Volumes I & II, and a great classic to add to any serious Civil War collector's library.
