* COLONEL CLAUS PHILLIPP MARIA JUSTINIAN SCHENK GRAF VON STAUFFENBERG(15 November 1907 – 21 July 1944) was a German army officer who is best known for his failed attempt on 20 July 1944 to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair.Alongside Major Generals Henning von Tresckow and Hans Oster, Stauffenberg was a central figure in the conspiracy against Hitler within theWehrmacht. Shortly following the failed Operation Valkyrie plot, he was executed by firing squad. As a military officer from a noble background, Stauffenberg took part in the Invasion of Poland, the 1941–42 invasion of the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa and the Tunisian campaign during the Second World War. His wife wasCountess Nina von Stauffenberg(German:Elisabeth Magdalena Schenk Gräfin von Stauffenberg; 27 August 1913 – 2 April 2006) Following the plot's failure, she was arrested and imprisoned, during which time she delivered her youngest child. After her husband's failed attempt to assassinate Hitler (he was summarily executed the following evening), the Countess von Stauffenberg was arrested by the Gestapo and taken into custody under the ancientSippenhaftlaw reinstated by the Nazi government. Her five children (the oldest child being Berthold the son in which this letter was written and autographed by) were placed in an orphanage in Bad Sachsa, Lower Saxony, under the surname of Meister.

Dear Mr. Bumball
To my dismay, when giving the house a thorough tidy-up, a letter from you dated 15 Oct 96 turned up, yet unopened. Besides your letter I also found a 5-dollar note for postage which quite embarrasses me. Since returning would probably embarass you equally, I think I give Shall give the equivaient in D-Mark to the church next Sunday. But I am awfully sorry that your letter should have lied around in the house for so long.
In your letter you asked for our family coat-of-arms, and also for a pair of German general officers' collar tabs. Unfortunately I cannot send you these because I have given all the ones I did not need any more to a former subordinate on his promotion to General, I am happy to let you have our coat-of-arms. In fact, in 1996 I would not have been able to do it since in those days I did not have a scanner and a color printer. And only this Spring I found a suitable original in our family history to copy from. With the aid of a desktop publishing program I produced the enclosed card, and I think it came out quite nicely.
If you wonder about the "Schenken", it is the plural of "Schenk" and part of our full name. It was originally one of the court offices - marshal ("Marschall") being another - which the grandees of the time, in our case the Earls of Zollern (who later became the Hohenzollern), established in imitation of the royal courts. The French name is Bouteillier from which the office and name of Butler stems. There were many more Schenk families some of whom used Schenk for short rather than their surname but only one survived besides our own.
I hope you are still well and enjoy life. We are very well indeed, and so are our children and grandchildren. Heimeran is still working hard but otherwise in good form - still unmarried, of course.
With Kindest regards
Your Sincerely
Berthold Graf Stauffenberg.
