This style of knife is popularly known as the \"Ka-Bar.\" This combat knife was originally adopted by the USMC in Nov. 1942 as the 1219C2 Combat Knife and was later designated the \"Mark 2 Knife, Fighting Utility.\" The Mark 2 knife was manufactured by several companies, including PAL Blade Company, Union Cutlery Company (Ka-Bar), Camillus, and Robeson.
According to a two-part article by Frank Trzaska in Dec. 2005 and Jan. 2006 Knife World Magazine regarding the USMC 1219C2 knives, PAL Blade Company was awarded a contract (NOM39096) in January 1943 for 100,000 USMC knives. They completed the contract by March of that year. This was the only contract PAL had for the USMC 1219C2 knife. The knifes were simply marked with \"PAL\" on one side of the ricasso and \"USMC\" on the other side. No other Mark 2 style knives made during or after WW2 were marked this way. Therefore, this particular knife was made during the period from January to March 1943 as part of a small contract for 100,000 knifes. PAL manufactured many Mark 2 knifes during WW2 (over 1 million), but they were all marked US Navy or USN, not USMC.
