Original One-of-a-Kind c.1770\'s Revolutionary War Period Highly Engraved Hessian/Germanic Officer\'s Sword Modified into a Large 19.5\" Belt Knife

Up for Consideration is a one-of-a-kind circa 1770\'s Revolutionary War Period Hessian/Germanic states officer\'s sword which was field damaged and converted into a large belt knife or short sword. Blade is most likely from the German State of Hesse Cassel (Hessians). A Solid worn brass hilt with straight upper quillon with a, integral roped grip, and stirrup-type guard which has broken off at the knuckle and filed down smooth. Blade nicely engraved with a crown, Z, and \" Fur Gott und Vaterland \" translated to “For God and Fatherland”. Here is also a standing lion holding a sword, a symbol used on the grenadier’s helmet and coins of Hesse Cassel as well as other Military related engravings. A rare opportunity to own an altered Revolutionary War Hessian sword belt knife! Good condition with some staining and light pitting to the blade. Blade measures a hair under 15.0 inches and the overall size of this Belt Knife / Short Sword is 19.5 inches long. It appears that all alterations to this damaged sword were period repaired during the American Revolutionary War. A Very interesting one-of-a-kind historical artifact for any historical military collection.


Size: 19.5 inches. Blade: 14.80 inches.

Markings: etching is quite vivid with only ware showing more towards the upper part of the blade.(Note images)

Condition: Untouched as found, blade is tight in the hilt but there is slight movement in the crossguard (Note images).

Previously been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
